Son Suk Ku

Biography

Son Suk-ku is a South Korean actor, director, and writer, born on February 7, 1983, in Daejeon, South Korea. He studied visual arts and film at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, initially aspiring to become a documentary filmmaker before pursuing acting.

He began his acting career with a small role in the film Scarlet Innocence (2014), followed by appearances in Black Stone (2015), Sense8 (2017), and Mother (2018). His television profile grew through Matrimonial Chaos (2018) and Designated Survivor: 60 Days (2019).

Son gained wider recognition for his role as Captain Im Ji-seop in the Netflix military drama D.P. (2021–2023). He also starred in the romantic film Nothing Serious (2021), which marked his first major leading role in a feature film.

His breakthrough came in My Liberation Notes (2022), where he portrayed the mysterious and troubled Mr. Gu. His performance received widespread praise and significantly increased his popularity. That same year, he played the villain Kang Hae-sang in the action crime film The Roundup, which became one of South Korea's biggest box-office successes of 2022.

His subsequent television credits include Big Bet (2022–2023), A Killer Paradox (2024), and Heavenly Ever After (2025). His film work includes Hit-and-Run Squad (2019), Nothing Serious (2021), The Roundup (2022), Troll Factory (2024), and Virus (2025).

In Nine Puzzles (2025), Son starred opposite Kim Da-mi as Kim Han-saem, a detective in the Violent Crimes Unit who has never stopped investigating the murder of police chief Yoon Dong-hoon from ten years earlier. He initially suspects Yoon E-na, the sole witness to the case, but later works with her as new murders involving mysterious puzzle pieces emerge.

Son Suk-ku has developed a reputation for portraying complex, restrained, and morally ambiguous characters, with performances spanning crime, action, romance, mystery, psychological thriller, and drama. He also made his directorial debut with the short film Unframed – Rebroadcast in 2021.
