Stephen Jackson

Biography

Stephen’s journey into the world of cinematography began with a deep love for films, which started when he saw Doctor Zhivago (1965) at a drive-in from the back of his family's station wagon. This formative experience sparked a lifelong passion for movies.

After completing school, he began his career in lighting by touring with bands and dance companies. In 1981, Stephen worked at lighting rental houses before getting his big break as the best boy on the Canadian feature The Grey Fox (1982). His next notable project was working on the iconic film First Blood (1982), and from there, he never looked back.

In 1987, Stephen transitioned to the role of gaffer, where he had the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse group of talented and award-winning Directors of Photography (DPs) from around the world. During this period, he learned the art of cinematography through hands-on experience, drawing inspiration from influential DPs like Bruce Surtees, David Watkin, and Guillermo Navarro.

By the year 2000, after accumulating more than 60 credits in TV and feature films, Stephen made a significant career transition into cinematography. Initially working on second units, he gradually moved up to become the Director of Photography on television series and feature films. Over the past two decades, he has solidified his reputation as a skilled and versatile cinematographer, shaping the visual storytelling of numerous projects across various genres.
