Steve Blackman
Biography
Steve Blackman is a Canadian-American television writer, producer, director, and showrunner, best known for creating and serving as showrunner of the Netflix superhero series The Umbrella Academy. He grew up in Edmonton, Canada, and initially studied law at the University of Alberta before changing careers to pursue screenwriting.
Blackman began his television career in the late 1990s and went on to write and produce series including NYPD Blue, Las Vegas, Private Practice, Fargo, Legion, Altered Carbon, and Outsiders. His work on Fargo earned him a Writers Guild of America Award and a Primetime Emmy nomination.
His biggest success came with The Umbrella Academy, which he created for Netflix based on the comic books by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá. The series premiered in 2019 and ran for four seasons, concluding in 2024. Blackman served as creator, executive producer, and showrunner throughout the series.
Blackman is also the founder of Irish Cowboy Productions, through which he develops and produces character-driven television projects.
