Biography
Steven Fierberg, ASC, is an American cinematographer and director, born on March 3, 1954, in Detroit, Michigan. He studied at Stanford University and spent his final undergraduate year in a joint program with Oxford University, where he studied British drama and film. He later earned an MFA from the American Film Institute.
Fierberg began his filmmaking career in New York's independent and punk film scene before moving into cinematography for feature films and television. His early credits include Vortex (1982), Forty-Deuce (1982), Streetwalkin' (1984), A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988), and Aspen Extreme (1993).
He became particularly recognized for his television cinematography, helping establish the visual style of acclaimed series such as Entourage, The Affair, Once Upon a Time, Emily in Paris, The Wheel of Time, and Bosch: Legacy. His work on the television miniseries Attila earned him an American Society of Cinematographers Award for Outstanding Cinematography.
His feature-film credits include Secretary (2002), Twelve (2010), Love & Other Drugs (2010), Repo Chick (2009), Rage (2009), and Entourage (2015). He has also worked on additional photography for projects such as Moulin Rouge!.
Fierberg has also directed television and film. His directing credits include episodes of The Affair and the feature How the Light Gets In. His short film Sea Life screened at the Sundance and Montreal film festivals.
In 2024, Fierberg received the ASC Career Achievement Award in Television, recognizing his long and influential career in cinematography. He has also won a Latin Grammy for Best Music Video of the Year for Robi “Draco” Rosa's Más y Más.
Beyond filmmaking, Fierberg has served as a vice president of the American Society of Cinematographers and has taught and mentored aspiring filmmakers at institutions including AFI, NYU, USC, UCLA, and Maine Media Workshops.
