Stuart Howell

Biography

Stuart Howell is known for The Peripheral (2022), The Crown (2016), and A Small Light (2023).

Stuart is a British Cinematographer working in movies and television for over twenty years.

 

​He collaborated extensively with Netflix and Leftbank Pictures on the award-winning original series 'The Crown' starring Claire Foy and Matt Smith, making his move into lighting as Director of Photography for Season two, and as Camera Operator/Additional Photography DoP for Season one.

 

In 2019 he was nominated for the BSC 'Best Cinematography' award for 'The Crown' season two episode one 'Misadventure'. Currently, he has just wrapped principal photography on series 4 of 'The Crown' with Director Julian Jarrold.

Alongside Television, as Cinematographer Stuart has shot 2nd unit/additional photography on Alex Garland’s Ex-Machina, Alan Rickman’s A Little Chaos, Cary Fukunaga’s Jayne Eyre, and Eran Creevy’s Collide, on which he also acted as 2nd Unit Director.

Other recent work includes 'Catherine the Great for Sky Atlantic/HBO starring Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke, directed by Philip Martin, and 'Cursed', Netflix's adaptation of Tom Wheeler and Frank Miller's graphic novel starring Katherine Langford, directed by Daniel Nettheim.

Stuart’s ‘A’ Camera/Steadicam Operator credits include Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin, Richard Linklater’s Me and Orson Welles, Patrick Hughes’s The Hitman’s Bodyguard, Shekhar Kapur’s Will, David Yates’s The Legend of Tarzan, Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kevin Macdonald’s The Last King of Scotland, and the HBO miniseries Generation Kill.
