Biography

Suchitra Sen (born Roma Dasgupta; 6 April 1931 – 17 January 2014) was one of the greatest actresses in the history of Indian cinema. Primarily associated with Bengali films, she also achieved immense success in Hindi cinema. Celebrated for her elegance, expressive performances, and magnetic screen presence, she became the first Indian actress to receive an international acting award.

Early Life

Suchitra Sen was born as Roma Dasgupta on 6 April 1931 in Pabna, Bengal Presidency, British India (now in Bangladesh). After her marriage to Dibanath Sen, she adopted the screen name Suchitra Sen and began her acting career in Bengali cinema.

Career

Suchitra Sen made her film debut in the early 1950s and quickly rose to stardom. She formed one of Bengali cinema's most celebrated on-screen pairings with actor Uttam Kumar, appearing together in numerous classics.

In Hindi cinema, she gained nationwide recognition with Devdas (1955), in which she portrayed Paro opposite Dilip Kumar. She went on to star in acclaimed films such as Bombai Ka Babu (1960), Mamta (1966), and Aandhi (1975), the latter featuring one of her most memorable performances opposite Sanjeev Kumar.

Her portrayal in Saat Pake Bandha (1963) earned her the Best Actress Award at the Moscow International Film Festival, making her the first Indian actress to receive an international acting honor.
