Biography

Suraiya Jamal Sheikh (15 June 1929 – 31 January 2004), popularly known as Suraiya, was one of the most celebrated Indian actresses and playback singers of the golden era of Hindi cinema. Known for her beauty, melodious voice, and emotional performances, she was among the highest-paid and most popular stars of the 1940s and 1950s.

Early Life

Suraiya was born on 15 June 1929 in Lahore, British India (now in Pakistan). She grew up in Bombay (now Mumbai) and developed an interest in music and acting at a young age. She began her career as a child artist in films before becoming a leading actress and singer.

Film Career

Suraiya made her screen debut as a child artist in Taj Mahal (1941). She gained recognition as an actress and singer with films such as Anmol Ghadi (1946), Dard (1947), and Vidya (1948).

She became a major star with successful films including Mirza Ghalib (1954), Dillagi (1949), Badi Bahen (1949), Shair (1949), Afsar (1950), and Mumtaz Mahal (1957). Her pairing with actor Dev Anand was especially popular, and they appeared together in several films.

As a playback singer, Suraiya recorded many memorable songs with her distinctive voice. She was one of the few actresses of her time who achieved equal fame as both an actress and singer.
