Biography

Surinder Pal Dhammi, widely known as Surinder Shinda, was a celebrated Indian Punjabi singer hailed as the "grandfather of MOC (Music on Console)" and recognized as a legend in Punjabi music. Born on May 20, 1953, in Choti Ayali village, Ludhiana district, Punjab, into a Ramgharia Sikh family, Shinda became a pioneering figure in Punjabi folk and kali (traditional singing style).

 

Career Highlights

Shinda began his musical journey in 1959 and went on to release nearly 165 albums over the course of his illustrious career. His repertoire includes numerous hits such as "Jatt Jeona Morh", "Putt Jattan De", "Truck Billiya", "Balbiro Bhabhi", and "Kaher Singh Di Mout." His songs, especially "Jeona Morh" and "Badla Le Layeen Sohneya", are considered timeless classics in Punjabi music.

 

He also made his mark in Punjabi cinema with appearances in films like Putt Jattan De and Ucha Dar Babe Nanak Da.

 

In later years, Shinda contributed to the growth of Punjabi music as a producer, mentoring younger artists and producing successful albums like Dhulla Bhatti. One of his final singles, "Hemis Boliyan", also gained popularity.

 

Collaborations and Legacy

Shinda shared a close professional relationship with legendary singer Kuldeep Manak and mentored prominent artists such as Amar Singh Chamkila and Gill Hardeep. His son, Maninder Shinda, continues his legacy in music.

 

Renowned for his kali singing style, Shinda’s contributions elevated Punjabi folk music to new heights, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.

Personal Life and Passing

Surinder Shinda married the cousin of Dev Tharikewala's wife, a lyricist who frequently collaborated with him. He passed away on July 26, 2023, at the age of 70, due to multi-organ failure. He is survived by his son, Maninder Shinda.
