Biography
Suseenthiran, an Indian film director and screenwriter, is widely recognized for his work in Tamil cinema. He was born in Amarapoondi, a small village in Palani, Dindigul, Tamil Nadu. Growing up in a family with a passion for films, Suseenthiran's father and uncle were also deeply involved in the film industry, though their work did not get released. Despite his family’s initial reluctance to support his cinematic ambitions, Suseenthiran was determined to become a filmmaker. At the age of 18, he moved to Chennai to pursue his dream, and it took him over a decade to make his directorial debut.
Early Career: Before stepping into the director's chair, Suseenthiran worked as an assistant director under notable filmmakers such as S. D. Sabha and Ezhil. During this period, he gained valuable experience and insights into filmmaking, which would later shape his career. His passion for storytelling and his understanding of film structure eventually led him to make his films.
Directorial Debut: In 2009, Suseenthiran made his directorial debut with Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu, a sports drama centered around the game of kabaddi. The film received critical acclaim for its authentic portrayal of rural life and the emotional struggles of kabaddi players. Based on real-life incidents involving his father, a former kabaddi player, the film depicted the hardships and ridicule faced by athletes. Suseenthiran was also inspired by the success of the 2001 Bollywood film Lagaan, which was based on cricket. Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu was a commercial success and helped establish Suseenthiran as a promising new director in Tamil cinema.
Subsequent Successes: Following the success of Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu, Suseenthiran continued to create notable films. In 2010, he directed Naan Mahaan Alla, starring Karthi and Kajal Aggarwal. The film was a commercial hit and received positive reviews for its engaging storytelling and strong performances.
Suseenthiran’s next project, Azhagarsamiyin Kuthirai (2011), based on Bhaskar Sakthi’s novel, was another critical success. The film, a mix of fantasy and drama, was selected for the Contemporary World Cinema category at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, which further elevated Suseenthiran's reputation in the industry.
In the same year, Suseenthiran directed Rajapattai, an action film starring Vikram and Deeksha Seth. Although the film didn’t perform as expected at the box office, it showed Suseenthiran’s ability to work in various genres. His next major success came with Aadhalal Kadhal Seiveer (2013), a well-received romantic drama. His film Pandiya Naadu (2013) also received rave reviews for its emotional depth and strong performances.
Later Projects and Growth as a Director: Suseenthiran’s collaboration with actor Vishnu Vishal continued with the successful sports drama Jeeva (2014), which was well-received for its heartwarming narrative about love, passion, and cricket. Following that, he directed Paayum Puli (2015), an action thriller starring Vishal. The film’s success marked Suseenthiran’s growing reputation as a versatile director.
In 2016, he joined hands again with Vishnu Vishal for Maaveeran Kittu, a socially relevant film that tackled issues of caste discrimination. Suseenthiran’s ability to address social issues through compelling storytelling earned him further accolades.
Despite the success of his early films, Suseenthiran faced a setback in 2017 with Nenjil Thunivirundhal, which failed to live up to the expectations set by his previous works. However, he continued to experiment with different themes and genres. In 2018, he directed Genius, a film about a young boy pressured by his father and later by his boss to be the best. The film explored the challenges of growing up in a competitive world.
Recent Projects and Impact: In 2019, Suseenthiran worked on Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu 2, a sequel to his successful debut film, but he was also busy with other projects, including the sports films Kennedy Club and Champion. Both films, which centered on the themes of sports and empowerment, showcased his ongoing interest in telling inspiring stories that resonate with audiences.
Suseenthiran has carved a niche for himself as a filmmaker who excels in creating engaging narratives, often focusing on rural settings, human emotions, and social issues.
