Biography

Takashi Miike is a renowned Japanese film director, producer, and actor, born on August 24, 1960, in Yao, Osaka, Japan. He studied at the film school founded by acclaimed director Shōhei Imamura and later worked in television and as an assistant director before beginning his own directing career.

Miike made his theatrical directing debut with Shinjuku Triad Society (1995) after initially working extensively in Japan's direct-to-video V-Cinema industry. He gained international recognition with the controversial horror film Audition (1999), followed by films such as Ichi the Killer (2001), Gozu (2003), 13 Assassins (2010), and Blade of the Immortal (2017).

His filmmaking is known for its extreme violence, provocative themes, unconventional storytelling, dark humor, and willingness to cross genre boundaries. His prolific career has made him one of the most distinctive figures in contemporary Japanese cinema. Blade of the Immortal was recognized as his 100th film as a director.

Miike made his first Korean-language television series with Connect (2022), a six-episode Disney+ psychological thriller starring Jung Hae-in, Go Kyung-pyo, and Kim Hye-jun. The series follows a man whose stolen eye is transplanted into a serial killer, leaving him connected to the killer's vision.

Through his extensive body of work, Takashi Miike has established a reputation as an exceptionally prolific and adventurous filmmaker, moving freely between horror, crime, action, comedy, fantasy, samurai films, and psychological thrillers.
