Tak Fujimoto

Biography

Tak Fujimoto, born Takashi Fujimoto on July 12, 1939, in San Diego, California, is a retired American cinematographer known for his influential work in American cinema. He is particularly recognized for his collaborations with directors Jonathan Demme, M. Night Shyamalan, and John Hughes.

Early Life and Career

Fujimoto studied at the University of California, Berkeley, and later attended the London Film School. He began his professional career working on commercials as an assistant to renowned cinematographer Haskell Wexler. His first major cinematography credit came with Terrence Malick's Badlands (1973).

During the 1970s, Fujimoto worked on a number of films produced by Roger Corman, including Death Race 2000 (1975). He also contributed as a second-unit cinematographer to Star Wars (1977).

Collaboration with Jonathan Demme

One of Fujimoto's most important professional relationships was his long-running collaboration with director Jonathan Demme. They first worked together on Caged Heat (1974) and subsequently collaborated on numerous films.

Their notable projects included Last Embrace (1979), Melvin and Howard (1980), Married to the Mob (1988), Miami Blues (1990), and The Silence of the Lambs (1991).

The Silence of the Lambs became one of Fujimoto's most celebrated achievements. His cinematography helped establish the film's tense and unsettling visual atmosphere, and he received major cinematography awards and nominations for his work.

Work with M. Night Shyamalan and John Hughes

Fujimoto later collaborated with M. Night Shyamalan on The Sixth Sense (1999), Signs (2002), and The Happening (2008). He also worked with John Hughes on films including Pretty in Pink and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Other significant cinematography credits include Devil in a Blue Dress (1995), Beloved (1998), The Manchurian Candidate (2004), Breach (2007), and the miniseries John Adams (2008).

Awards and Recognition

Fujimoto has received significant industry recognition, including a Primetime Emmy Award for cinematography for John Adams. He has also received nominations and awards from organizations including BAFTA and the American Society of Cinematographers.

He became a member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) in 1997.
