Biography
Teresa Wright was an American actress known for her naturalistic performances in some of Hollywood's most acclaimed films of the 1940s and 1950s.
She was born Muriel Teresa Wright on October 27, 1918, in New York City. She began her career on Broadway before moving into films. Her screen debut came in The Little Foxes (1941), for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Wright quickly became one of Hollywood's leading young actresses. Her notable films include Mrs. Miniver (1942), The Pride of the Yankees (1942), Shadow of a Doubt (1943), The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), and The Men (1950). She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Mrs. Miniver.
She was also notable for receiving Academy Award nominations for her first three films, an unusual achievement at the time. Her performance as Charlie Newton in Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt is considered one of her most memorable roles.
Later in her career, Wright worked extensively in television and on stage, appearing in productions such as The Miracle Worker, The Love Boat, and Murder, She Wrote.
Teresa Wright died on March 6, 2005, in New Haven, Connecticut, at the age of 86. She is remembered as one of the respected actresses of Hollywood's Golden Age.
