Biography

Thora Hird (May 28, 1911 – March 15, 2003) was an English actress, comedian, and presenter whose career spanned more than 70 years. Born in Morecambe, Lancashire, England, she began performing on stage at a young age and later became a familiar figure in British theatre, film, and television.

Hird made her film debut in the 1940s and appeared in numerous British productions, including The Card (1952), The Entertainer (1960), A Hard Day's Night (1964), The Nightcomers (1971), and The Anniversary (1968). Her warm personality and distinctive Lancashire accent made her especially popular with British audiences.

She achieved major television success through series such as Meet the Wife, Happily Ever After, and Last of the Summer Wine. She also became widely admired for her performances in serious television dramas. One of her most acclaimed roles was as Vera Duckworth in the long-running soap opera Coronation Street, where she appeared intermittently from the 1970s through the 1990s.

Hird was particularly celebrated for her collaborations with writer Alan Bennett. Her performances in his television plays, including A Cream Cracker Under the Settee, earned her critical acclaim and several major awards. She won three BAFTA Television Awards during her career and was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 1993 for her services to drama and charity.

Thora Hird continued working well into her later years and remained one of Britain's most beloved character actresses. She died in London on March 15, 2003, at the age of 91.

She is remembered as one of the most enduring performers in British entertainment, equally successful in comedy, drama, film, theatre, and television.
