Biography

Timur Bekmambetov is a Kazakh-Russian filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer known for his visually innovative storytelling and contributions to both Russian and Hollywood cinema. He was born on June 25, 1961, in Guryev (now Atyrau), Kazakhstan.

 

 

Bekmambetov began his career directing commercials and music videos before achieving international recognition with his Russian fantasy-action films Night Watch (2004) and Day Watch (2006). These films became major box-office successes in Russia and established him as a leading visionary director.

 

 

He made his Hollywood debut with Wanted (2008), starring Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy, which became a global hit known for its stylish action sequences. Bekmambetov later directed Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012) and produced the critically acclaimed computer-screen thriller Searching (2018).

 

 

In addition to directing, Bekmambetov has pioneered the “Screenlife” filmmaking format, telling stories through digital interfaces such as webcams and smartphones. His innovative approach continues to influence modern visual storytelling and digital cinema.
