Biography

Tom Cross is an American film editor widely respected for his precise, emotionally grounded approach to storytelling. While he maintains a relatively private personal life, Cross has become a prominent figure in contemporary cinema through his collaborations with acclaimed directors and his work on character-driven films.

Cross began his career working in editing and post-production, gradually building a reputation for his strong narrative instincts and ability to shape complex performances into cohesive, impactful stories. His breakthrough came through his collaboration with director Damien Chazelle on Whiplash (2014), a tightly edited psychological drama that earned Cross the Academy Award for Best Film Editing. The film showcased his talent for rhythmic cutting and tension-building, particularly in music-driven sequences.

He continued working with Chazelle on La La Land (2016) and First Man (2018), further demonstrating his versatility across genres—from musical romance to historical drama. In addition to these projects, Cross has edited films such as Joy, The Greatest Showman, and Hostiles, working with directors who value strong emotional pacing and visual clarity.
