Biography

T. G. Vinayakumar, professionally known as Vinayan, is a prominent Indian film director, screenwriter, producer, and lyricist who primarily works in Malayalam cinema, with occasional ventures into Tamil cinema. Born on May 16, 1961, in Kuttanad, Alappuzha district, Kerala, Vinayan has made significant contributions to the Indian film industry, directing over 40 Malayalam films, four Tamil films, and one Telugu film.

 

 

Career

Vinayan began his cinematic journey with the film "Super Star," where he cast a Mohanlal look-alike in the lead role. He gained recognition for his versatility, directing films across various genres, including comedy, horror, action, fantasy, and family dramas. Some of his notable works include:

In 2005, Vinayan directed Albhuthadweep (Wonder Island), a film that featured around 300 dwarfs, a first in Indian cinema. The film's lead actor, Ajayan, was recognized by the Guinness Book of Records, and Vinayan himself was listed in India's Limca Book of Records. The film received both Filmfare and Cinema Express awards and was successfully remade in Tamil in 2007 by Vinayan himself.

 

 

Vinayan is also credited with introducing several actors and singers to the Malayalam film industry, including Jayasurya, Indrajith Sukumaran, Anoop Menon, Honey Rose, Priyamani, Manikkuttan, Suresh Krishna, Meghana Raj, Lakshmi Menon, singer Sithara, and singer Sudeep Kumar.

 

 

Contributions and Initiatives

Beyond filmmaking, Vinayan has been actively involved in initiatives aimed at supporting film workers. He is the founder and president of the MACTA Federation and has launched a cooperative society with assistance from the Government of Kerala for the benefit of film workers. Additionally, he serves as an advisory member of the Cine Workers Welfare Board, sponsored by the Government of India.

 

 

Recognition

Throughout his career, Vinayan has received several accolades for his contributions to cinema. Notably, he won the Filmfare Award for Best Director – Malayalam in 2001 for his film Karumadikkuttan.

 

 

Vinayan's innovative storytelling and dedication to the film industry have cemented his place as a significant figure in Indian cinema.
