Biography

Often known as the king of stand-up comedy in India, Vir Das is a stage and film actor, comedian, host, and writer, who predominantly works in the Hindi entertainment industry. He is known for starring in films like Badmaash Company, Go Goa Gone and Delhi Belly.

 

Following a courtship of five years, Vir Das tied the knot with his girlfriend Shivani Mathur at a private ceremony in Sri Lanka, in October 2014.

 

After the completion of his program at Harvard University, Vir Das returned to India at the age of 24, in 2003. He has since then performed in more than 100 comedy shows all over India, emerging as the country`s finest and most sought-after stand-up comedian. 

 

Some of his famous shows include Who Let the Das Out?, ViRagra, and Son of a Switch. Vir Das is famous for his intelligent humor and is frequently referred to as India`s answer to Jay Leno.

 

His TV career kicked off with two shows on Zoom Channel: Is Route Ki Sabhin Linein Maast Hain and Ek Rahin Vir. The response he got from the shows led him to host Top Drive Getaway for Star World. 

 

He further hosted a sports comedy show, Cricket First, Sab TV`s Lo Kar Lo Baat, and CNN-IBN`s Now Not Showing. His credibility as a host got him his own news comedy show, News on the Loose on CNBC-TV 18.

 

Post appearing in minor roles in movies like Namastey London, Mumbai Salsa, and Love Aaj Kal, Vir Das starred in the Hindi crime-comedy movie Badmaash Company, alongside Shahid Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, and Meiyang Chang. 

 

Directed by Parmeet Sethi, the movie was a commercial hit and Vir Das received a Zee Cine Award nomination for Best Male Debut.

He then starred in Aamir Khan`s black comedy Delhi Belly. Starring Imran Khan, Kunaal Roy Kapur, Poorna Jagannathan, and Shenaz Treasurywala, the movie opened to positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. 

 

Lisa Tsering of Hollywood Reporter called the film a "Sexy, filthy and thoroughly entertaining comedy". In 2013, Vir Das starred in the Indian first zombie comedy film, Go Goa Gone, which also featured Saif Ali Khan, Kunal Khemu, Ankit Tiwari, and Pooja Gupta in pivotal roles.

 

Subsequently, he appeared in films like Sooper Se Ooper, Shaadi Ke Side Effects, and Revolver Rani, all of which bombed at the box office.

His other releases include Mastizaade, Santa Banta Pvt. Ltd., 31st October, Shivaay, and Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi.
