V.N. Mayekar
Biography
V.N. Mayenkar is an Indian film editor. In a career spanning more than forty-five years, he has edited more than eighty movies like Zor Lagake Haiya, Ghatak, Ghayal, Shreemant Damodar Pant, and several others. He has worked with many directors like Kedar Shinde, Raj Kumar Santoshi, and Basu Chatterjee.
However, the most interesting aspect of his career was his transition from analog video editing to digital video editing when many other editors were losing their jobs with the advent of the computer in filmmaking in the 1980s. Mayenkar made his debut as an assistant editor to editor G. G. Mayekar for the movie Saraswatichandra directed by Govind Saraiya in 1968. The film won two Filmfare Awards. He then worked as an assistant editor in Abhinetri directed by Subhod Mukherji in 1970.
He worked with G. G. Mayekar as his assistant for some time, learning the ropes of video editing. Mayenkar made his debut as the lead film editor in director Basu Chatterjee’s Chhoti Si Baat in 1975. Since then, he has edited numerous movies, for example Bollywood movies like Chakravyuh in 1978, Priyatama in 1978, Dillagi in 1978, Apne Paraye in 1980, Dil Aashna Hai in 1982, Andaaz Apna Apna in 1994, Aunty No. 1 in 1998, China Gate in 1998, The Legend Of Bhagat Singh in 2002, Nigehbaan: The Third Eye in 2005, Vivah in 2006, Ek Vivah. Aisa Bhi in 2008, Zor Lagake.
Haiya! in 2009, Toh Baat Pakki! in 2010, and several others. He also received special credits for Ishq Vishk in 2003. Mayenkar has also edited Marathi films like Aai in 1995, Jatra: Hyaalagaad Re Tyaalagaad, and Shreemant Damodar Pant in 2013 among many others.
He also edited the Telugu film Swami Ra Ra in 2013. In 1989, Mayenkar made his directorial debut with the Marathi movie Pasant Ahe Mulgi which he co-produced with Rameshchandra Nayak. Mayenkar won the Filmfare Award under the Best Editing Award two times for the movie Ghayal in 1990 and the film Ghatak: Lethal in 1996.
He also won the Zee Cine Award under the Best Editing Category for the movie, The Legend of Bhagat Singh in 2003, an Award from the International Indian Film Academy under the Best Editing category for the film Vaastav: The Reality in 2000, and four more film awards. He won the V. Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award at the 53rd Maharashtra State Film Awards in 2016.
