Waheeda Rehman

Biography

Winner of multiple awards, including a National Film Award, Waheeda Rehman is one of the most popular yesteryear actresses of the Indian Film Industry. The actress is known for her versatility and was active during the 1950s to 80s. She initially started her career in the Telugu film industry. 

 

Her first two films Rojulu Marayi and Jayasimha (1955) were huge blockbusters. She soon shifted to Bombay and under the mentorship of Guru Dutt, she worked hard to place herself as one of the leading ladies of her time. 

 

The duo together has given films like CID (1956), Pyaasa (1957), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) which is now widely regarded as one of the classics of Indian Cinema.

Her pairing with Dev Anand was one of the most celebrated on-screen pairings of her time. Some of their hit films include Solva Saal (1958), Kala Bazar (1960), Baat Ek Raat Ki (1962), and Guide (1965) for which she won the Filmfare Best Actress Award. 

 

Soon, she was seen in the critically acclaimed Reshma Aur Shera (1971), and for the same, she won the National Film Award for Best Actress. 

 

After the mid-seventies, she started appearing in supporting roles that were central to the storyline. Some of the significant projects during her second innings are Kabhi Kabhie (1976), Trishul (1978), Namak Halaal (1982), Himmatwala (1983), Mashaal (1984), Lamhe (1991), Om Jai Jagadish (2002), Rang De Basanti (2006), and Delhi 6 (2009). 

 

Her 2018 projects include Kamal Haasan`s bilingual spy thriller film titled Vishwaroopam II in Tamil and Vishwaroop II in Hindi. Her 2021 releases include Skater Girl (2021).
