Biography

Washington Allston (1779–1843) was an influential American painter and poet, often regarded as a pioneer of Romanticism in the United States. Born in Georgetown, South Carolina, Allston demonstrated an early talent for art and literature. He initially studied under American artists before traveling to Europe to further his education, spending significant time in England and Italy. These experiences exposed him to the European Romantic and neoclassical traditions, which shaped his distinctive artistic vision.

Allston’s career is marked by his mastery of dramatic lighting, expressive compositions, and imaginative subjects.
