Biography
Wayne Thiebaud (1920–2021) was an American painter best known for his colorful still-life paintings of everyday objects, particularly cakes, pies, pastries, ice cream cones and other sweets. His distinctive style combined realistic representation with bold colours, thick paint and carefully arranged compositions. Although associated with the Pop Art movement, he preferred to describe himself as a traditional painter.
Born on November 15, 1920, in Mesa, Arizona, Thiebaud grew up in California. He began his career as a cartoonist and commercial artist, working briefly at Walt Disney Studios and later serving in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, where he created cartoons and illustrations. After the war, he studied art at San José State College and California State College, Sacramento, earning his master's degree in 1953.
Thiebaud gained national recognition in 1962 through exhibitions in New York. His famous paintings include Cakes (1963), Three Machines (1963), Crown Tart (1961), Boston Cremes (1962) and Three Ice Cream Cones (1964). Alongside food subjects, he painted portraits, figures, landscapes and striking cityscapes inspired by the steep streets of San Francisco.
He also had a distinguished teaching career, working at Sacramento City College and the University of California, Davis, where he influenced generations of artists. In 1994, he received the National Medal of Arts from President Bill Clinton. Wayne Thiebaud died on December 25, 2021, in Sacramento, California, at the age of 101. He is remembered as one of America's most celebrated painters of everyday life.
