William Edward Fichtner (born November 27, 1956) is an American actor known for his prolific career in film and television, often cast in compelling supporting roles that showcase his unique intensity.
👶 Biography and Early Career
Fichtner was born on Mitchel Air Force Base on Long Island and raised in Cheektowaga, New York. He is of German ancestry. He first pursued a degree in criminal justice from Farmingdale State College and the State University of New York at Brockport. However, a theatrical improvisation class in college led him to pursue acting, and he later studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.
He began his on-screen career in 1987, notably playing the role of Rod Landry in the daytime drama As the World Turns. He was later recognized for his recurring role as Ryan Sparks in the sitcom Grace Under Fire from 1994 to 1995.

Fichtner established himself as a recognizable and reliable character actor in major feature films throughout the 1990s and 2000s, often excelling in action, crime, and drama genres.
FilmHeat (1995), Contact (1997) as the blind astronomer Kent, Armageddon (1998) as Colonel Willie Sharpe, The Perfect Storm (2000), Black Hawk Down (2001), The Longest Yard (2005), and The Dark Knight (2008). His role in the ensemble drama Crash (2004) earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.
He starred as Sheriff Tom Underlay in the sci-fi series Invasion (2005–2006). His most recognized TV role is as the ruthless FBI Agent Alexander Mahone in three seasons of Prison Break (2006–2009).
He was also a main cast member as Adam Janikowski in the sitcom Mom (2016–2021) and starred as Carl Hickman in the series Crossing Lines. Video Games provided the voice of Ken Rosenberg in the games Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
