Biography

William Zabka is an American actor, producer, and screenwriter best known for his role as Johnny Lawrence in The Karate Kid (1984) and its sequel, Cobra Kai. Over the years, he has built a reputation not just as an actor but also as a filmmaker, earning an Academy Award nomination for his work. His career resurgence with Cobra Kai has cemented his status as a beloved figure in pop culture.

Early Life and Background

Birth and Family

William Michael Zabka was born on October 20, 1965, in New York City, USA. He was raised in a family with strong connections to the entertainment industry. His father, Stan Zabka, was a director, composer, and writer, while his mother, Nancy Zabka, worked as a business liaison, producer, and production assistant.

Education

Zabka attended El Camino Real Charter High School in California before pursuing film studies at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). However, his acting career took off early, leading him to focus on the entertainment industry full-time.

Career

Breakthrough with The Karate Kid

In 1984, Zabka got his big break when he was cast as Johnny Lawrence, the main antagonist and bully in The Karate Kid, starring alongside Ralph Macchio (Daniel LaRusso) and Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi). His portrayal of Johnny, the skilled but aggressive Cobra Kai student, made him one of the most memorable movie villains of the 1980s.

Despite playing a bully, Zabka had no prior martial arts training before the film. However, he later became proficient in Tang Soo Do, earning a green belt.

Other 1980s and 1990s Film Roles

After The Karate Kid, Zabka continued to build his career in Hollywood. He starred in several movies and TV shows, often playing tough or antagonistic characters:

  • Just One of the Guys (1985) – Played Greg Tolan, another high school bully.
  • Back to School (1986) – Featured as Chas Osborne, an arrogant college student.
  • National Lampoon’s European Vacation (1985) – Appeared as Jack, Audrey Griswold’s boyfriend.

Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, he made guest appearances in popular TV shows like The Equalizer, The Greatest American Hero, and How I Met Your Mother.

Filmmaking and Academy Award Nomination

While many knew him as an actor, Zabka also ventured into filmmaking. In 2003, he co-wrote and produced a short film called "Most" (The Bridge), which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Live Action Short Film in 2004. The film was praised for its deep storytelling and emotional impact.

Zabka continued directing and producing projects, including commercials and music videos, such as No More Kings’ “Sweep the Leg” (2007), which humorously referenced The Karate Kid.

Comeback with Cobra Kai

In 2018, Zabka reprised his role as Johnny Lawrence in Cobra Kai, a sequel series to The Karate Kid, which debuted on YouTube Red before moving to Netflix. Unlike his original villainous portrayal, Cobra Kai presented Johnny as a more complex and sympathetic character, struggling with his past while trying to rebuild his life and mentor a new generation of martial artists.

Cobra Kai became a massive success, earning critical acclaim and a loyal fan base. Zabka’s performance was praised for adding depth to Johnny Lawrence, transforming him into a fan-favorite antihero. The show has continued for multiple seasons, with strong anticipation for its future.

Personal Life

William Zabka is married to Stacie Zabka, and the couple has two children. He maintains a relatively private personal life but is known for his strong Christian faith and commitment to family values.
