He is the only son in his family and has an older sister. Yook pursued his education at Dongshin University, majoring in practical music.

Yook debuted as a vocalist with the South Korean boy group BtoB on March 21, 2012. The group quickly gained popularity, leading to the formation of its sub-unit, BtoB Blue, in 2016, where Yook also showcased his vocal talents.
