Yoon Jong Bin

Biography

Yoon Jong-bin is a South Korean film director, screenwriter, and producer, born on December 20, 1979, in Busan, South Korea. He studied filmmaking at Chung-Ang University and first gained attention with his short film Identification of a Man (2004), which won Best Comedy at the Mise-en-Scene Short Film Festival.

His feature-film debut, The Unforgiven (2005), was his graduation project and received several awards at the Busan International Film Festival. The film also screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, establishing Yoon as a promising new Korean filmmaker.

Yoon went on to direct Beastie Boys (2008), followed by the acclaimed gangster film Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time (2012). The latter became a major commercial success and earned him the Best Original Screenplay award at the Blue Dragon Film Awards and the Korean Association of Film Critics Awards.

He subsequently directed Kundo: Age of the Rampant (2014) and the historical espionage thriller The Spy Gone North (2018). The Spy Gone North was presented out of competition at Cannes and later won Best Picture at the Baeksang Arts Awards.

Yoon expanded into television with the Netflix crime series Narco-Saints (2022). He later directed the Disney+ mystery thriller Nine Puzzles (2025) alongside Kim Jung-ho. The 11-episode series stars Kim Da-mi and Son Suk-ku and follows a criminal profiler and a detective investigating a series of murders connected by mysterious puzzle pieces.

In Nine Puzzles, Yoon took a different stylistic approach from his earlier crime films, deliberately creating a world that balances realism with a more comic-book-like atmosphere. He also described the series as his first project in which he directed without writing the screenplay himself.

Yoon Jong-bin is recognized for his work in crime, gangster drama, historical action, espionage, thriller, and mystery, often focusing on morally complicated characters and realistic power struggles. His filmography demonstrates a progression from independent filmmaking to major commercial films and internationally distributed streaming productions.
