Yoon Sung Hyun
Biography
Yoon Sung-hyun (윤성현), born on August 3, 1982, in Oakland, California, is a prominent South Korean film director and screenwriter. He pursued film studies at the Seoul Institute of the Arts and further honed his craft at the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA).
Yoon's early short films, notably Boys (2008), garnered attention on the festival circuit. His feature debut, Bleak Night (2010), produced through KAFA's feature film production research program, received critical acclaim and established him as a significant new voice in Korean cinema. The film earned him Best New Director awards at the 48th Grand Bell Awards, 32nd Blue Dragon Film Awards, and 12th Busan Film Critics Awards.
After a decade-long hiatus, Yoon returned with Time to Hunt (2020), a dystopian action thriller that premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film was released globally on Netflix, reaching a wide international audience.
In 2025, Yoon expanded into television with the sci-fi drama series Newtopia, marking his debut in serialized storytelling.
