Yutaka Yamada (born 1989) is a Japanese music composer based in Los Angeles, known for his distinctive and emotionally expressive scores for films, television series, and anime. He studied musical composition at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music and began his professional career in 2009 after winning first prize at the Vienna Instruments Strings Arrangement Contest.
Yamada gained international recognition for composing music for popular productions such as Tokyo Ghoul, Great Pretender, Vinland Saga, and Netflix's Alice in Borderland. His composition "Glassy Sky" from Tokyo Ghoul became particularly popular, and its melody was sampled by Eminem in his song "Good Guy" from the album Kamikaze (2018). He also composed the score for the Chinese film Cry Me a Sad River (2018) and the live-action film Kingdom (2019), for which he received the Japan Academy Film Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Music.
His work on Great Pretender earned nominations at the 2020 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, while his score for Vinland Saga Season 2 received the Jerry Goldsmith Award in 2023. In addition to screen scoring, Yamada collaborates with pop and electronic dance music artists and has contributed music to Riot Games projects, including League of Legends.
