Zaira Wasim is a former Indian actress who became a household name with her debut performance in Dangal (2016), followed by her critically acclaimed role in Secret Superstar (2017). Despite her short career in Bollywood, Zaira left an indelible mark with her extraordinary talent and screen presence.
Zaira Wasim was born and raised in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, to Zahid Wasim, an executive manager, and Zarqa Wasim, a teacher. From a young age, Zaira displayed a natural inclination toward the arts. Although she never intended to pursue acting, her life changed when she was cast in Dangal at the age of 15.
Career
Bollywood Breakthrough (2016–2019)
Dangal (2016):
Zaira made her acting debut with Aamir Khan’s Dangal, a biographical sports drama based on the life of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters, Geeta and Babita. Zaira portrayed the younger version of Geeta Phogat. Her performance won her widespread acclaim, including the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Secret Superstar (2017):
In her second film, Zaira played the lead role of Insiya Malik, a teenage girl aspiring to become a singer despite her conservative upbringing. The film, produced by Aamir Khan, became a massive hit, both critically and commercially. Her portrayal of Insiya won her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress.
The Sky Is Pink (2019):
Zaira’s final film was The Sky Is Pink, where she starred alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Farhan Akhtar. The film, based on the life of motivational speaker Aisha Chaudhary, received critical acclaim, with Zaira’s performance being particularly praised.
