Alex Paul

Biography

Alex Paul is an Indian music director and composer best known for his work in Malayalam cinema. Active since the early 2000s, he has composed music for around 50 films and has also worked as a playback singer and actor.

Early Life and Musical Training

Alex Paul was born into a family with a strong connection to music and entertainment. His father, M. A. Paul, was a music artist associated with one of the early orchestra troupes in Kochi. Alex is also the younger brother of filmmaker and actor Lal, of the famous Siddique-Lal duo.

He studied Carnatic music at R. L. V. College of Music and Fine Arts in Thrippunithura and learned musical instruments at Kalabhavan in Kochi. Before entering mainstream cinema, he established his own recording studio and composed music for albums and television serials.

Film Career

Alex Paul made his debut as a film music director with Chathikkatha Chanthu (2004), directed by Rafi-Mecartin. The success of the film helped introduce his musical style to a wider Malayalam audience.

He subsequently composed music for several successful Malayalam films, including Thommanum Makkalum (2005), Classmates (2006), Chocolate (2007), Alibhai (2007), Lollypop (2008), 2 Harihar Nagar (2009), Chattambinadu (2009), In Ghost House Inn (2010), Seniors (2011), Cobra (2012) and King Liar (2016).

Breakthrough with Classmates

One of the biggest milestones in Alex Paul's career was Classmates (2006). The songs "Ente Khalbile Vennilavu Nee" and "Kaattadi Thanalum" became especially popular and helped establish him as a prominent music director of Malayalam cinema during the 2000s.

His collaborations with lyricist Vayalar Sarath Chandra Varma also produced several successful songs during this period.

Other Work

In addition to Malayalam films, Alex Paul has worked on projects in Tamil and Kannada cinema. His credits include the Tamil films Kantharvan and EP Co 302, as well as the Kannada film Kalla Malla Sulla.

He has also contributed as a composer of songs, playback singer, and actor. His acting credits include appearances in Anthony's Quest for Love and the Malayalam film Alappuzha Gymkhana (2025).

Later Career

Although his prominence as a film composer was particularly strong during the 2000s and early 2010s, Alex Paul has continued to be associated with music and cinema. His later credits include King Liar (2016), Yours Lovingly (2018), and Ormachithram (2024).
