Benedict Wong

Biography

Benedict Wong, born on July 3, 1971, in Eccles, Greater Manchester, England, is a distinguished British actor who has carved a remarkable career spanning theatre, film, and television. Born to immigrant parents from Hong Kong, Wong was raised in Salford and discovered his passion for performing arts at Salford City College.   

Wong's journey began on stage, where he honed his craft in various productions, including at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. His early screen roles included appearances in British television series like Last of the Summer Wine and Pie in the Sky. He gained critical acclaim for his role in the 2002 film Dirty Pretty Things, earning a British Independent Film Award nomination.   

His career steadily progressed with roles in films such as Sunshine (2007), Moon (2009), and Ridley Scott's Prometheus (2012). However, it was his portrayal of Kublai Khan in the Netflix series Marco Polo (2014-2016) that brought him significant international attention.   

Wong achieved further global recognition with his entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Wong in Doctor Strange (2016). He has since become a beloved and recurring character in the MCU, appearing in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.   

Beyond the MCU, Wong has continued to showcase his versatility in a wide range of projects, including The Martian (2015), Annihilation (2018), and the television series Deadly Class (2019) and What We Do in the Shadows. In 2024, he took on a main role in the highly anticipated Netflix science fiction series 3 Body Problem, portraying the determined investigator Da Shi.
