Jagathy Sreekumar

Biography

Jagathy Sreekumar is a veteran Indian actor and one of the most celebrated performers in Malayalam cinema. Born on 5 January 1951 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, his original name is Sreekumar Achary. He is the son of Malayalam dramatist and writer Jagathy N. K. Achary.

Early Life

Jagathy developed an interest in acting during his school years and actively participated in theatrical performances. While studying at Mar Ivanios College in Thiruvananthapuram, he became deeply involved in theatre. His early stage experience helped him develop the expressive style and comic timing that later became important elements of his film career.

Film Career

Jagathy made his film debut with Chattambi Kalyani in 1975. Although he initially appeared in supporting and comic roles, his natural timing, distinctive expressions, and ability to improvise quickly established him as a sought-after performer.

Over the following decades, he became one of the most prolific actors in Malayalam cinema, appearing in more than a thousand films. His performances covered a wide range of characters, from eccentric comic figures and supporting roles to serious and dramatic characters.

Some of his best-known films include Kilukkam, Meesa Madhavan, Classmates, Paradesi, Nizhalkkuthu, Vaasthavam, Urumi and Swapna Sanchari. His work demonstrated that he could combine comedy with emotion and also deliver convincing dramatic performances.

CBI Film Series

One of his particularly memorable roles is CBI Vikram in the popular CBI film series. He appeared alongside Mammootty in the series beginning with Oru CBI Diary Kurippu and continued in its subsequent installments. He later reprised the character in CBI 5: The Brain (2022), marking his return to the big screen after his long absence following his 2012 accident.

Awards and Recognition

Jagathy has received numerous honors during his career. His major recognition includes Kerala State Film Awards for performances in films such as Apoorvam Chilar, Kilukkam, Nizhalkkuthu, and Meesa Madhavan. He also received a Special Mention for Paradesi, Veeralipattu and Arabikkatha, and later won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Comedian for Swapna Sanchari.

He has also received honors such as the Bahadoor Award, Prem Nazir Award, Asianet Film Awards and Filmfare Awards South, including lifetime-achievement recognition for his contribution to Malayalam cinema.

Accident and Later Career

In March 2012, Jagathy was seriously injured in a vehicle accident. The accident resulted in a prolonged recovery and significantly interrupted his film career. After years away from regular acting, he returned to the screen in CBI 5: The Brain in 2022, where he reprised CBI Vikram.

His later appearances have been regarded as significant moments by Malayalam cinema audiences, reflecting the lasting affection and respect he has earned throughout his career.
