Biography

Murali (25 May 1954 – 6 August 2009), born Muraleedharan Pillai, was an acclaimed Indian actor, theatre artist, television personality and author, best known for his powerful performances in Malayalam cinema. He also appeared in several Tamil films.

Murali began his film career in the 1980s, initially appearing in negative roles before establishing himself as a versatile character and lead actor. He became especially known for portraying emotionally complex, intense, and socially grounded characters. His notable films include Aadharam (1992), Kanakkinavu (1996), Thalolam (1998), Neythukaran (2002) and Amaram (1991).

In Amaram (1991), directed by Bharathan and written by A.K. Lohithadas, Murali played an important role alongside Mammootty, Maathu and Chitra. His performance earned him the Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor.

Murali achieved his greatest national recognition with Neythukaran (2002), in which he portrayed Appa Mestry, a communist freedom fighter and traditional weaver. His performance won him the National Film Award for Best Actor. He also received several Kerala State Film Awards during his career.

Beyond cinema, Murali was active in theatre, television, and literature. He served as chairman of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi and authored several books. He was also one of the founding members of the Malayalam film actors' association AMMA.

Murali died in Thiruvananthapuram on 6 August 2009, aged 55, following a heart attack associated with diabetes. He is remembered as one of the most respected and influential character actors in Malayalam cinema.
