Early Life and Career Beginnings
Maharajan began his career in the film industry by providing scripts for Hindi films, notably contributing to the story and screenplay of "Zor: Never Underestimate the Force" (1998). His involvement in the scriptwriting process laid a strong foundation for his transition into directing.
Directorial Debut: "Vallarasu" (2000)
Maharajan made his directorial debut with the Tamil film "Vallarasu," starring Vijayakanth. The film was well-received, earning positive reviews and achieving box office success. Notably, a scene featuring Vijayakanth and Devayani was shot at a jewelry shop in T. Nagar, Chennai, and a song sequence was filmed near Pollachi with approximately 100 dancers. The film's success led Maharajan to consider directing "Narasimha," a project he later opted out of.
Transition to Hindi Cinema
Following the success of "Vallarasu," Maharajan remade the film in Hindi as "Indian" (2001), starring Sunny Deol. The Hindi version aimed to capture the essence of the original while catering to a different audience.
Subsequent Works
Maharajan directed "Anjaneya" (2003), featuring Ajith Kumar in his first role as a police officer. Despite the film's promising premise, it received negative reviews, with critics highlighting inconsistencies in treatment and direction. There were rumors that Ajith Kumar's involvement affected the film's final product.
His next project, "Arasatchi" (2004), starred Arjun Sarja and marked the Tamil film debut of Miss Universe 2000, Lara Dutta. The film featured a large ensemble cast of villains, including Raghuvaran, Karan, and Nasser. Filming took place at various international locations, including London, New Zealand, and Canada. The film faced delays due to financial issues but was eventually released in 2004.
